Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Eugene Demarcus McKeithan, 31, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Veronica Smart, 34, also of Detroit.

On July 20, 2023, at approximately 1:08 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Marseilles Street and Minerva Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim lying face down in the street, unresponsive, with a gunshot wound to the head. Medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.

It is alleged that while driving near the intersection of Marseilles Street and Minerva Street, Defendant McKeithan fired a handgun, fatally wounding Ms. Smart. It is further alleged that the defendant pulled the victim from the vehicle before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant later the same day.

Eugene Demarcus McKeithan has been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder, one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm. *

He was arraigned and remanded to jail on July 23, 2023, in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 31, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for August 7, 2023, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King.
