Detroit Woman Charged With Filing A False Felony Report
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Velicia Stinson, 24 (DOB: 9/29/91), of Detroit, in connection with filing a false police report. On February 1, 2016 at approximately 6:20 a.m., the defendant filed a report with the Detroit Police Department alleging that on the same date, at approximately 5:20 a.m., she was sexually assaulted by a Detroit police officer in the 2200 block of Glynn Court. Investigation of the allegations and a review of the scout car in-car video did not support the sexual assault allegation filed by the defendant.
On May 6, 2016, Stinson was charged with False Report of a Felony, a felony carrying a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison. On May 8, 2016, she was arraigned and given a $1,000 personal bond. Her probable cause conference is scheduled for May 19, 2016 and her preliminary examination is scheduled for May 26, 2016.
Prosecutor Worthy said: "The alleged actions of Ms. Stinson will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Falsely reporting a sexual assault perpetuates the ugly stereotype that women are lying. This is one of the biggest barriers to eradicating sexual assault in this country, and a reason why there are untested kits sitting on shelves in police departments across the country."
