Barricaded Gunman Charged with Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Carl Londa Phelps III, 55, of Van Buren Township, in connection with unlawfully discharging a firearm and barricading himself inside his home for four hours before being placed under arrest.
On October 24, 2022, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Van Buren Township police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 770 block of Sumpter Road for reported gun shots fired. Upon their arrival, officers heard gunshots coming from inside the residence. Officers set up a barricade around the residence and notified the Western Wayne County Special Operations Team (SOT) to assist. After a four-hour stand-off, officers entered the home and placed the defendant in custody.
It is alleged that the defendant fired gunshots across Sumpter Road in Van Buren Township, before barricading himself inside his home.
Carl Londa Phelps III has been charged with one count of Discharge of a Firearm in or at a Building, one count of Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer, and two counts of Felony Firearm. *
He was arraigned yesterday afternoon in 34th District Court and given a $20,000 cash bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for November 2, 2022, at 8:30 a.m., before Judge Tina Green. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Van Buren Township Police Department.
