On November 1, 2023, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Joseph Patrick Murray, 44, in connection with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Murray is the current Chief of the Dearborn Fire Department.

On August 29, 2023, at approximately 2:44 a.m., it is alleged that Murray was intoxicated and driving over the speed limit around Telegraph Road and Annapolis Street in Dearborn Heights. Dearborn Heights police officers conducted a traffic stop at Telegraph Road and Carlysle Steet. It is alleged that Murray was under the influence of alcohol while operating his car and the officers him placed custody.

Joseph Patrick Murray was charged with one count of Operating with a High BAC under MCL.257.625 (1)(6) and one count of Operating While Intoxicated under MCL 257.625 (1).*

He turned himself in on November 3, 2023, and was arraigned in 20th District Court before Judge David Turfe and given a $5,000 personal bond. The conditions of bond were no alcohol use, and to abide by any conditions of employment that have been set by the City of Dearborn. He is represented by attorney Edward Zelenek. On December 6, 2023, Murray pleaded guilty to one count of Operating While Intoxicated under MCL 257.625 (1). All other charges were dismissed.

On January 17, 2024, Murray was sentenced by Judge Mark J. Plawecki to one year of probation with 120 hours of community service as directed by the City of Dearborn. He must complete inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient counseling. He is ordered to have one random alcohol/drug screening once a week, as directed by the City of Dearborn, and he must attend one Alcohol Anonymous meeting per week.
