Detroit Man Charged in Liquor Store Fatal Shootings
On February 1, 2022, at approximately 11:12 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a liquor store in the 9920 block of Wyoming Street in Detroit for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located both victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced Mr. Bankhead deceased. Mr. Deberry was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
There was verbal altercation inside the store between the defendant and Mr. Deberry and they were told to exit the store by an employee. They went out to the parking lot where it is alleged that Defendant Montgomery assaulted Mr. Deberry with a metal bar. Mr. Deberry grabbed a crowbar striking the defendant in the head several times. At that time Defendant Montgomery pulled out a handgun and fired two shots, fatally wounding Mr. Deberry and Mr. Bankhead. Mr. Bankhead was an innocent bystander that had no involvement in the altercation.
John Edward-Dayter Montgomery has been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder and two counts of Felony Firearm. *
The defendant was arraigned today in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for February 22, 2022, and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for March 1, 2022, in 36th District Court before Judge Kenneth King. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Detroit Police Department. *The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
