Detroit Man Charged with Burying Dog Alive
On November 10, 2022, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Jacob Xavier Kasper, 20, of Detroit, in connection with burying his dog alive. The warrant request was charged when the defendant was not in custody. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on April 7, 2023.
On September 30, 2022, at approximately 6:07 p.m., Detroit Animal Control (DAC) officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1700 block of Evans Street for a report of a dog that was buried alive. Upon their arrival, officers made contact with the defendant. The dog was surrendered to DAC officers and later euthanized on October 1, 2022, due to its injuries.
It is alleged that Defendant Kasper buried the dog alive in the backyard of his home.
Jacob Xavier Kasper has been charged with one count of Animals - Killing/Torturing - Second Degree, a 7-year felony, and one count of Abandoning/Cruelty to One Animal, a 93-day misdemeanor. *
"Dogs are living and breathing animals. Dogs should be attended to even if they are sick and especially if they have been abused. No living being should ever be buried alive in lieu of proper medical or other standard care. This is not rocket science," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
He was arraigned on April 7, 2023, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Joseph Boyer and given a $5,000 personal bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for April 13, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for April 20, 2023 at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Ronald Giles.
