Illinois Man Charged in Romulus Amber Alert Case
Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Jawaan E. Johnson, 23 (DOB: 2/6/92), of Markum, Illinois in connection with a May 16, 2015, 2:23 a.m., carjacking and child abduction that occurred at a location in the 31100 block of Flynn Drive Romulus, Michigan. It is alleged that Johnson carjacked a vehicle from a 24-year-old woman and intentionally drove off with her 16-month-old child. An Amber Alert was put out and a witness alerted the police when a man matching Johnson's description was observed near Merriman and Michigan Avenue. Romulus police officers arrested the defendant. They later located by the child unharmed and returned him to his mother.
Johnson has been charged with two counts of Carjacking, Kidnapping, Unlawful Imprisonment and Larceny - $200 or More, But Less Than $1,000 for taking personal property located in the car. Johnson was arraigned today in 34th District Court in Romulus and received a $100,000 cash bond. His probable cause hearing will be held on May 27, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. and his preliminary examination will be on June 6, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Romulus Police Department.
