Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of 13-year-old Girl

Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy has charged Ivan Berrien, 45 (DOB 9/6/69), of Detroit in connection with the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old female. On January 27, 2015 at approximately 4:40 p.m. in the defendant's home located in the 15800 block of Lapin 13-year-old girl, Berrien's 14-year-old son, and three other children between the ages of five and seven in the home without adult supervision. It is alleged that when Berrien left to pick up a pizza the 14-year-old son got his father's rifle from the bedroom. The son and the girl were playing with the gun when it discharged, fatally striking her in the head. The police were called and a medic pronounced the girl dead at the scene.

The defendant has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Child Abuse Second Degree, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Firearm. Yesterday, 36th District Court officials erroneously said that Berrien would be arraigned at 10:30 a.m. today. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office recently discovered that the defendant was arraigned at 2:30 p.m. on January 29, 2015 and received a 275,000/10% bond with the condition that he cannot purchase or possess a gun. His probable cause hearing is scheduled for February 5, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. and the preliminary examination is scheduled for February 11, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge Shannon Holmes.

"The allegations in this case are that the defendant left children in his home with an unsecured gun and in the short time he left to get a pizza a teenage girl was fatally shot. The message simply is not getting through that children can't be in a home with an unsecured gun," said Prosecutor Worthy.
