Novi Man Charged in Asbury Park Incident

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Olajuwon Israel, 24, (DOB: 07/03/1994) of Novi, Michigan. On August 20, 2018 at approximately 10:30 p.m., in the 20300 block of Asbury Park, Detroit police officers were investigating several males standing in the street next to a car, drinking out of plastic cups. The men were asked if they had weapons and it is alleged that all of the men raised their shirts to show that they had no weapons, except Israel. It is alleged that Israel stepped away from the group and began running. Two officers pursued Israel and gave him verbal commands to stop. It is alleged that Israel jumped over a fence and discharged his weapon. The officers returned fire and one shot took effect in Israel's body. After he was shot, it is alleged that he continued to flee and was discovered in a yard in the 20300 block of Murray Hill, where he was placed under arrest. He was taken to a local hospital and is currently being treated for his wound.

Israel has been charged with Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, seven counts of Possession of a Fraudulent Financial Transaction Device, Police Officer - Resisting and Obstructing and Felony Firearm*

Israel was arraigned in the hospital this afternoon. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 30, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 6, 2018at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge William McConico in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $50,000 cash/surety bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
