Detroit Police Officer Charged with Misconduct in Office

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Detroit Police Officer Chancellor Dmitri Searcy, 32, of Detroit, with two charges of Misconduct in Office, in connection with two on-duty incidents.

On July 2, 2018, while employed as a Detroit police officer, Defendant Searcy conducted a traffic stop at Woodward Avenue near Congress in downtown Detroit. He pulled over a 21-year-old woman from Sterling Heights, MI. It is alleged that during the traffic stop, the woman was instructed to give her phone number to avoid getting a ticket. After doing so, it is alleged that the victim received unwanted calls and texts from Officer Searcy.

On August 14, 2018, while employed as a Detroit police officer, Defendant Searcy conducted a traffic stop in the area of Woodward Avenue and Jefferson Avenue. It is alleged that he pulled over a 29-year-old woman from Ray, MI. It is alleged that the woman was informed that she would go to jail, have her car impounded, and receive a ticket unless she gave Defendant Searcy her phone number. After doing so, the victim received unwanted calls and texts from him.

Searcy has been charged with two counts of Misconduct in Office, a common law offense carrying a maximum penalty of five years in prison.* He was arraigned this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Laura Echartea. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 24, 2019 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 30, 2019 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Kenyetta Stanford Jones in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $15,000 personal bond.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
