Detroit Man Charged with Careless Discharged of a Weapon
Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Michael Lewis Williams, 61, (DOB: 06/07/1956), of Detroit, in connection with a fatal shooting of Patricia Ann Cosby, age 55, also of Detroit.
On October 9, 2017, at approximately 6:45 p.m., Detroit Police officers responded to a 911 call regarding a dog attack in the 9500 block of Goodwin Street in Detroit. An updated dispatch indicated a shooting occurred. Upon arrival at the scene, police officers observed EMTs treating the victim who was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead after arrival.
It is alleged that Williams, in an effort to assist the victim being attacked by a stray dog, fired one shot at the animal. The dog fled. The defendant ran after the dog and fired two more shots. Upon his return to the scene, the defendant discovered the victim had been shot.
Williams has been charged with Careless Discharge of a Weapon Causing Injury or Death*. He was arraigned on the warrant at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon before 36th District Court Magistrate Laura Echartea. The probable cause conference is scheduled for March 26, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the preliminary examination is scheduled for April 2, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before Judge Deborah Lewis Langston in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $45,000/10% bond.
*The charges are allegations unless and until the defendant is convicted.
