Detroit Man Charged in Fatal Car Crash

Darick Anthony Brown, 42, (DOB: 01/11/1976), of Detroit, has been charged in connection with the fatal car crash that killed Kaneesha Griffin, 26, also of Detroit. On October 7, 2018 at 2:40 a.m., it is alleged that the defendant was driving in his car while intoxicated and waiving a handgun. Ms. Griffin was riding in the front passenger seat of Brown's car. A Detroit police officer performed a traffic stop at a location in the 17600 block of East Warren. The officer approached the car and gave commands which Brown ignored. It is alleged that Brown drove away at a high rate of speed and fled multiple police cars. Brown drove north on University Place for approximately one mile when he lost control and crashed into a garage in the 17700 block of Chester Road. Brown and Griffin were not in the car when police arrived at the crash scene. A handgun was confiscated near Brown's car and placed on evidence by the police. Griffin was discovered in the alley behind the garage. She was taken to a local hospital where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the car crash. Brown was found in the rear of a location in the 8660 block of Farmbrook and arrested by the police.

Brown is charged with one count each of: Murder - Second Degree; Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death; Fleeing and Eluding First Degree; Carrying a Concealed Weapon; and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. He is also charged with five counts of Felony Firearm.*

Brown was arraigned this afternoon at before 36th District Court Magistrate Millicent Sherman. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for October 23, 2018 at 8:30 a.m.; the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for October 30, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. Both hearings are before Judge William McConico in 36th District Court. The defendant received a $10 million cash/surety bond.
