Former Riverview Fire Officials Charged in Time Card Scheme

Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged former Riverview Fire Captain Donald Meyer, 64, (DOB: 04/05/1954), and former Fire Lieutenant Scott Brighton, 42, (DOB: 02/16/1976), in connection with a time card fraud scheme that occurred over multiple years.

It is alleged that from December 20, 2013 through March 3, 2018, Meyer submitted falsified time cards for $20,307 in unearned wages. It is also alleged that from December 20, 2013 through March 3, 2018, Brighton submitted falsified time cards for $27,402 in unearned wages. An internal time card audit conducted by a private firm hired by the City of Riverview revealed that Meyer and Brighton inflated the hours on their time cards, falsely claiming they were working. The investigation of the case was conducted by the Michigan State Police Department. On August 23, 2018, Meyer and Brighton were terminated from their employment with the Riverview Fire Department.

Donald Meyer and Scott Brighton have each been charged with one count of Larceny by False Pretenses - $20,000 to $50,000, a 15 year felony, and one count of Receiving and Concealing Stolen Property Over $20,000, a 10 year felony.*

Meyer and Brighton were arraigned today in 27th District Court and both received $20,000 personal bonds and an order to have no contact with witnesses in the case. Their Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for September 20, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 27, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. Both hearings are before 27th District Court Judge Randy Kalmbach.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
