Samuel McCray Charged in Gas Station Homicide and Non-Fatal Shootings
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Samuel Anthony McCray, 27, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Gregory Kelly, 37, and a 60-year-old man and a 37-year-old man, all of Detroit.
On May 6, 2023, sometime after 3:00 a.m., it is alleged that Defendant McCray attempted to make a purchase inside of the gas station. When the purchase of under $4.00 was declined, the defendant attempted to leave with unpurchased items. The clerk locked the store with McCray and the victims inside. It is further alleged that Defendant McCray began to argue with the clerk before producing and firing a handgun, fatally wounding Mr. Kelly, and non-fatally wounding the 60-year-old and the 37-year-old victims. After the men were shot, the clerk unlocked the door to the store, and Defendant McCray fled from the scene.
On the same day at approximately 3:09 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a gas station in the 12800 block of West McNichols for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival officers located the victims inside the gas station suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced Mr. Kelly deceased. The surviving two victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of Defendant McCray on May 7, 2023. And Aspects of the case currently remain under investigation and no further information will be released at this time.
Samuel Anthony McCray has been charged with First-Degree Murder, two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, and three counts of Felony Firearm and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. *
He was arraigned and remanded to jail this morning in 36th District Court. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for May 23, 2023, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for May 30, 2023, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King. "I want to be very clear," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy. "The investigation in this case is not finished, it is ongoing."
