Wayne County Executive Robert A. Ficano served with distinction as Sheriff for nearly 20 years before being elected to his current office in January 2003. County Executive Ficano presides over 2.1 million citizens in the largest county in the state of Michigan and the eleventh largest county in the nation (according to 2004 numbers from the census). Overseeing an annual budget of $2.2 billion, Mr. Ficano provides innovative leadership for the region and state, delivering services that citizens expect while aggressively pursuing investment, economic growth and jobs creation opportunities. Major initiatives being lead by Mr. Ficano include the Aerotropolis Airport City, Cobo expansion plan and international investment with China and other nations.

Mr. Ficano is recognized as a dedicated public servant committed to the people. He manages Wayne County as a business and citizens are the stakeholders that he is responsible to.

A graduate of Livonia public schools, Mr. Ficano pursued his college education at Michigan State University earning a bachelors degree in 1974. Three years later, he earned a law degree from the University of Detroit Law School, and practiced law in the private sector before entering public service.

Mr. Ficano was Assistant City Attorney in the City of Westland before being elected Wayne County Sheriff in 1984, making him one of the youngest men in United States history to hold this position.

A tireless ambassador, he regularly meets with citizens, community leaders, the corporate community and other elected officials throughout the county, the State of Michigan and nationally to highlight and promote Wayne County.

Mr. Ficano’s vision for Wayne County is clear-families are his top priority. His staff reflects the vast diversity of the County and demonstrates a genuine sensitivity to the communities it serves. He is committed to making Wayne County a desirable place to conduct business, pursue an education, build careers and raise families. Implementing this vision means investing in economic and community development, education and quality health care. From its cities, suburbs and rural communities, Mr. Ficano’s goal is to leverage Wayne County’s assets: diversity, a highly skilled workforce, educational opportunities, nationally recognized health care facilities and business growth opportunities that enhance the quality of life for all constituents.

County Executive Ficano is the proud father of two children and resides in Livonia.

EMS crew saves man’s life with new program
Today, The Detroit/East Medical Control Authority (DEMCA) committee awarded an EMS crew this year’s Lifesaver of the Year award for the work they did this past summer while transporting a cardiac arrest patient to the hospital.
