| Prevention Services
Wayne County devotes millage dollars and general fund money as well as resources garnered from federal and state grants to prevention services for young people. Wayne County recognizes that children who are nurtured by positive adults and challenged by productive activities are not so easily attracted to delinquent behavior.
Wayne County offers a variety of community-based programs that provide mentoring, tutoring, and recreational and character-building activities to young people throughout the county.
For seventeen years, the county of Wayne has supported the Youth Assistance Program[s]. This effort served over 2,000 youth throughout the 43 communities in Wayne County on an annual basis.
In 2004, an additional 4,000 children benefited from summer programming held at 21 locations. This effort will be repeated in summer 2005.
For the last three years, the county has sponsored conferences on teen parenting, distributing parenting kits with nutritional, educational, and health information for babies during their first five [5] years. Over 1,000 teen parents and their children have benefited from these annual events.
