DETROIT – Wayne County Executive Warren C. Evans and Wayne County Commissioner Joe Palamara are working to save Wayne County’s Meals on Wheels program. The announcement comes after Executive Evans submitted his proposed FY 2016-17 and FY 2017-18 budgets, which includes funds each year to serve seniors through the Meals on Wheels program in downriver and western Wayne County.  Commissioner Palamara, who is also the Chair of the Ways & Means Committee, immediately went to bat for seniors in Wayne County to support the necessary funding to continue the program.

“Commissioner Palamara and I agree that the Meals on Wheels program is important for Wayne County’s seniors,” said Executive Evans. “As my administration helps the county regain its financial footing, we are also focused on supporting programs that improve the lives of our residents.  We appreciate Commissioner Palamara’s support and commend him for his efforts to secure the funding necessary for this program to continue over the next two fiscal years.”

Executive Evans and Commissioner Palamara’s efforts will ensure that seniors registered to receive nutritious meals through the Meals on Wheels program, will continue to have access to the delivery service. The program serves approximately 2,400 homebound seniors in downriver and western Wayne County. Meals are delivered to 40 sites by more than 1,000 volunteers.

“I appreciate the administration's efforts to work closely with the downriver communities and I am grateful for the acknowledgement on how well we worked together to preserve full funding for Meals on Wheels," said Wayne County Commissioner Joe Palamara. “It is a very worthy program and good government to maintain the program at a reasonable and healthy level.”

Seniors can find out more about the Meals on Wheels program by contacting the Wayne County Senior Service division at 734.727.7357.

The Evans Administration’s budget is expected to undergo hearings by the Wayne County Commission.  The Commission has until August 31, 2016 to adopt the proposed budget.
