Wayne County Commissioners celebrated Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 20 with a program highlighting African music, dance and ceremonies as well as a pledge from Chair Alisha Bell that similar celebration will continue for years to come.

"In light of things going on in the country with DEI and other rollbacks, this commission will continue to celebrate the accomplishments of all Americans including African Americans," Chair Bell said, noting the commission has celebrated Black History Month for several decades.

The program, arranged by Commissioner Jonathan Kinloch (D-Detroit), featured a performance of "Life Every Voice and Sing," also known as the Black National Anthem, by singer Perry Columbus, a drum and dance performance by Djembefola Detroit and an ancestor-honoring libation ceremony by Shamarie.
