Canton Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of Neighbor
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Devereaux Christopher Johnson, 47, of Canton, in connection with the fatal shooting of Nathan Morris, 35, also of Canton. The two men resided in the same neighborhood in Canton.
On August 10, 2024, at approximately 11:48 a.m., Canton police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 250 block of Cornell Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim lying in the street in front of the residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and transported Mr. Morris to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
It is alleged that the defendant initiated a verbal argument when he saw Mr. Morris walking down the street. Defendant Johnson then produced and fired a handgun multiple times, fatally wounding Mr. Morris who was unarmed at the time he was killed.
Devereaux Christopher Johnson has been charged with First-Degree Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and two counts of Felony Firearm.*
He was arraigned and remanded to jail this afternoon in 35th District Court. His Probable Cause Conference is on August 23,2024. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Canton Police Department.
