On June 14, 2023, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Geraldine Johnson, 61, of Harper Woods, in connection with a car crash that killed Janice Bauer, 67, of Grosse Pointe Park, MI. Johnson is a bus driver for the Detroit Department of Transportation.

On June 2, 2023, at approximately 7:36 a.m., Defendant Johnson was at the intersection of Griswold Street and West Congress Street in Detroit. When the defendant began to make a left turn onto Griswold Street, she fatally struck the victim while she was crossing the street on a green light. Medics arrived on scene and pronounced Ms. Bauer deceased.

Geraldine Johnson was charged with one count of Moving Violation Causing Death.

"This case is tragic on every level. Janice Bauer lost her life. The alleged facts are that defendant, Geraldine Johnson, literally ran her over with the city bus she was driving and caused her death," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Defendant Johnson was arraigned on June 14, 2023, in 36th District Court and given a $25,000 cash bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. On August 26, 2023, Defendant Johnson pleaded no contest to Moving Violation Causing Death.

Today, the defendant was sentenced before Judge Lynise Bryant to two years of probation and one year of jail time. The first six months will be served in the Wayne County Jail and the remaining six months will be held in abeyance. If she violates her probation in any way she will serve the last six months in jail.
