Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged a 15-year-old juvenile male, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old boy, and the non-fatal shooting of a 32-year-old woman, also of Detroit. The 32-year-old victim is the mother of the juvenile. The juvenile respondent is not being charged as an adult defendant; he has been adult designated. This means that upon conviction an adult designation allows the judge to have the option of sentencing the respondent as a juvenile, or as an adult, or to fashion a blended juvenile sentence with the option of imposing an adult sentence if the juvenile is not rehabilitated.

On November 7, 2024, at approximately 6:00 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to the area of Seward Street and Second Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers observed the 14-year-old victim on the ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the 14-year-old victim to a local hospital. The 32-year-old victim was privately transported to a local hospital for treatment. The 14-year-old victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased on November 11, 2024.

It is alleged that a verbal altercation between the juvenile respondent and the 14-year-old victim escalated, and the juvenile produced and fired a handgun multiple times, striking the 14-yer-old victim in the head, left arm, right hand, and left thigh, and striking the 32-year-old victim in the right arm.

The juvenile respondent has been charged with Second-Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.*

The Preliminary Hearing was held this afternoon at the Lincoln Hall of Justice and the juvenile was remanded to the Juvenile Detention Facility. The Preliminary Examination will be held on November 19, 2024, at 1:30 p.m., in the Lincoln Hall of Justice before Judge Sheila Gibson.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
