Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Richard Williams, 29, of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of his three-year-old son.

On October 30, 2024, at approximately 12:44 a.m., at a residence in the 4000 block of Grand Street in Detroit, it is alleged that the child found the defendant's unsecured handgun in the home and fired it, striking himself in the stomach. It is also alleged that the child was in the care of the defendant at the time of the incident. The child was privately transported to a local hospital where he received treatment for his wound.

Richard Williams has been charged with Unsafe Storage Causing Injury.*

Prosecutor Kym Worthy said, " Another day. Another child injured with a loaded, unsecured gun. Tomorrow it be another if we don't universally pay attention and take this issue seriously. These are our children - and if we cannot unite for them who will we unite for?"

He was arraigned on November 1, 2024, in 36th District Court. His bond is $50,000 cash or surety, with a bond redetermination hearing on November 4, 2024. His probable cause hearing is on November 8, 2024, before Judge Ronald Giles. His preliminary examination is scheduled for November 14, 2024.
