Detroit Man Charged in Warwick Street Armed Robbery and Fatal Shooting
Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Dwaine Thomas Hunt III, 23, of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Richard Shorts, 29, also of Detroit.
On June 4, 2024, at approximately 9:05 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 19400 block of Warwick Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim lying in the street in front of the residence, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Medics arrived on the scene and transported Mr. Shorts to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
It is alleged that during a verbal altercation between the defendant and the victim, Defendant Hunt robbed an unidentified man of his handgun. It is further alleged that the verbal altercation escalated, and Defendant Hunt produced and fired the handgun multiple times, fatally wounding Mr. Shorts. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendant on July 1, 2024.
Dwaine Thomas Hunt III has been charged with First-Degree Murder, Armed Robbery, and two counts of Felony Firearm.*
He was arraigned and remanded to jail on July 4, 2024, in 36th District Court, before Magistrate Dawn White. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for July 11, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for July 18, 2024, at 1:35 p.m., before Judge Kenneth King.
