Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Tiara Shardae Taylor, 38, of Detroit, in connection with the non-fatal shooting of her three-year-old son.

On September 6, 2024, at approximately 4:00 p.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 11400 block of Saint Patrick Street in Detroit for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Officers transported the child to a local hospital for treatment. It is alleged that the child found an unsecured handgun in the home and shot himself in the head.

Tiara Shardae Taylor has been charged with Firearms - Safe Storage Violations - Premises Under Individual's Control - Minor Present and Injured Self or Another, a five-year felony.*

She was arraigned on September 8, 2024, in 36th District Court before Magistrate Laura Echartea and given a $250,000 personal bond. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for September 17, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 24, 2024, at 8:45 a.m., before Judge Kenneth King.

"This is another case that illustrates the tragic consequences of failure to secure a weapon. Children shooting themselves is completely avoidable if people will secure their weapons," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.
