Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Shaniqua Lashauntae Baskins, 30, of Detroit, in connection with a car crash that killed her four-year-old son.

On May 6, 2024, at approximately 1:00 p.m., Michigan State Troopers were dispatched to northbound I-75 freeway near Piquette Street for a reported crash. Upon their arrival, officers observed the four-year-old victim lying on the freeway, unresponsive. Medics arrived on the scene and transported the child to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that Defendant Baskins was knowingly driving with faulty brakes with her son unsecured in the car. She was westbound on I-94 freeway towards northbound I-75 freeway when the brakes on her car failed. As a result, the defendant crossed over the grass median on I-75 and struck another car. The impact from the crash ejected her son from the rear driver's side window of the car on to I-75, fatally injuring him.

Shaniqua Lashauntae Baskins has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Second-Degree Child Abuse.*

She was arraigned this morning in 36th District Court and given a $20,000 cash/surety bond. A bond re-determination hearing is scheduled for November 18, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for November 25, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for December 2, 2024, at 1:45 p.m., before Judge Aliyah Sabree. Please request a photograph of the defendant from the Michigan State Police.

*The charges are allegations and defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
