Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Brandon Butler, 17, of Farmington Hills, in connection with the fatal shooting of Tavita Hunter, 23, of Detroit. Defendant Butler will be waived and tried as an adult defendant.

On July 13, 2024, at approximately 4:45 p.m. Detroit police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Cardoni Street and Robinwood Street for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located Ms. Hunter on the grass, suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. Members of the Detroit Fire Department arrived on the scene and pronounced Ms. Hunter deceased.

It is alleged that an altercation between the defendant and the victim escalated, and Defendant Butler produced and fired a handgun, fatally wounding Ms. Hunter, before fleeing the scene.

Brandon Butler has been charged with First-Degree Murder and Felony Firearm.*

He was arraigned this afternoon in 36th District Court before Magistrate Malaika Ramsey-Heath and given a $200,000 cash/surety bond with a GPS tether and house arrest. A bond redetermination hearing is scheduled for August 5, 2024, at 9:00 a.m., before Judge William McConico. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for August 13, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for August 19, 2024, at 1:45 p.m. before Judge Kenneth King.
