Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Keonte Kemari Weddington, 17, and Elijah Sanders, 17, both of Detroit, in connection with the fatal shooting of Jethro Kendrick, III, 34, The defendants will be waived and tried as adult defendants.

On January 28, 2025, at approximately 9:13 a.m., Detroit police officers were dispatched to a liquor store in the 8000 block of Woodward Avenue for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers located the victim lying on the sidewalk in front of the store, unresponsive, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Members of the Detroit Fire Department rendered aid to the victim. Medics arrived on the scene and transported Mr. Kendrick to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

It is alleged that Defendant Weddington fired a handgun and Defendant Sanders fired a rifle at the victim as he exited the liquor store, fatally wounding him, before fleeing the scene. Investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of the defendants on February 21, 2025. More specific facts will be placed on the record in court at the preliminary examination.

Keonte Kemari Weddington and Elijah Sanders have both been charged with one count of First-Degree Murder and one count of Felony Firearm.*

They were arraigned and remanded to jail today in 36th District Court, before Magistrate Delphia Burton. The Probable Cause Conference is on March 12, 2025, and the Preliminary Examination on March 18, 2025, both before Judge Shawn Jacque.
